I KNOW I Can DO More, BE More… but How?

Have you ever felt… “there’s more” ?

Or do you say to yourself, I “should” do _____

or say _______

or be _______?

Maybe you’re thinking, I really “need” to _______. 

I get it.  I get the part of you that is so quick to find all the things you fall short of, or things you keep yourself from doing.  I get the part of you that holds yourself back.  I get you.

Typically, after one of these ‘should’ moments, you may quickly get distracted with something else… something more comfortable to do, or to say (or not say) or something easy.  You may also feel the ‘should’ is pretty big, so logically, you ‘should’ save for a later date when you can really dedicate the proper time to “it”… You plan to go back to it, but don’t… We all do this – our internal talk can be so very harsh.  I’ll bet even today you had a “should” come across your mind that perhaps you dismissed.  So while we work to make sense to ourselves and file these things away or even flat out avoid them… we find that later, we still have that same, recurring “should” or that “need to” feeling come up… only this time, it comes with a friend called “guilt”. 

The guilt that we feel because we didn’t take action. 

Life is about growth, it’s about change and it’s about learnings… and solid next steps that you feel good about.

We know inside that we have held ourselves back.  We know that we can live more full lives, and have more love, more joy, more peace…   so much more – step by step… but shoot – we held ourselves back.  Yikes.  I can just about see your head nodding in agreement.  I mean, we don’t want to think we’re guilt-laden people or that we’re totally lazy or procrastinators… but truth be told, we know (we really, really ‘know’) that we can do more and be more. We know we can step forward, step upward and out of that comfort zone.  Sometimes it’s a nudge or sometimes it’s a lingering monkey on our backs and we start feeling kinda yucky and maybe even really terrible over time, because it’s eating away at us… 

YIKES!

Ok – so before we get all ‘bummed’ out…

let’s get real here and when we’re truthful to ourselves, really honest with the person in the mirror… we realize there’s a pattern here and it’s become more of a normal behavior… and as humans – it’s completely common.  YES – normal!  It’s how our brains help us be safe from stepping out of our comfort zones…  We just tend to forget that we were the ones who drew the lines for our own comfort zone in the first place.  We’ve forgotten that we can change the lines and that we ‘get’ to draw them with wavy or squiggly lines and we get to shift what might be uncomfortable into solid steady steps forward… a JoyFULL comfort zone!  How cool is that?

I LOVE IT when I can outsmart my old, outdated self!  Woooooo!  That’s SO AWESOME!

I absolutely have told myself, “self… you’re being a procrastinator again… you’re being kinda lazy.” – And to that I replied, “it’s ok… I’ll get around to it someday.”

Here’s a fun solution – draw a circle on a page – big or small, it doesn’t matter the size.  And it doesn’t have to be a perfect circle, so you don’t have to trace around a cup or jar to make it pretty.  Got your circle?  Ok – now you’re going to write FOUR letters in the center of it… stay with me, we’re almost done.  The four letters are T, U, I, T.  Now if you have scissors handy, you can cut it out.  

Hold it in your hand and read the four letters:  TUIT.  (It sounds like two-it.) Say it a couple of times to make sure you’ve got it.

Did you get the solution yet? 

You’ve made yourself A Round TUIT.  Woooooo!  

It’s super easy to use, and once you use it frequently enough, you can merely imagine that you have it and you’ll get the results.

Here’s the magic…

Now you can put it somewhere nearby and when you have a “should” or “need to” of some sort cross your mind and your inside voice answers with, “I’ll get around to it”….  STOP, PAUSE, WAIT — you’ve GOT ONE!  You’ve Got a Round TUIT!  Isn’t it great!  Now I’m sure you’re smiling and you may have rolled your eyes at me during this (you know who you are).  And that’s great!  You get it.  You already know that you’ll have this handy – even if in your imagination and that you can use your TUIT anytime you desire to stop pausing on the important “shoulds” of life.  Gauge what you’ll use it on and use wisdom to make some motion happen… take those steps and do some up-shifting.

Sometimes we just need a little round piece of paper to give ourselves permission to get unstuck.  To be able to stop holding ourselves back and to move in the direction that we REALLY want to go.  Follow those inspired nudges!

We get to leave that faux, comfy “in-action” into being PRO-ACTIVE or a Pro at Action!  Woooooo!

Say to yourself I WILL get AROUND TO IT!

This is a super-simplified sample of what Life Coaching is all about.   Well, there usually isn’t an arts and crafts project, but there’s something tangible that you can use… tools that you can easily use, remember and act on.  Things that you can relate to personally, so you can move out of your “shoulds” and into completion, satisfaction, accomplishment and have not only success, but freedom from what used to hold you back.  All this from a round TUIT?  Well… it’s a start and I invite you to give it a try.
